D&AD

Onto the D&AD competition briefs, I've chosen the illustration one which is to illustrate a cover for the 'Little white lies' magazine. The brief requires a portrait of the leading character in the given list of films, I've gone with Super 8. Super 8 is a cool sci-fi adventure film, after watching it I wanted to shoot some film on a super 8 camera, analogue film is much more romantic than digital! For the cover I wanted to go with a double exposure idea, Dan Mountford's double exposure images (http://www.danmountford.com/) has given me some inspiration for this one, I've been messing around with double exposures myself on film (http://www.flickr.com/photos/74564163@N05/). Don't know wether this will be my final concept but I think it will end up as a pretty sweet cover!

Photographs

Began taking some photos with an old Russian LOMO Cosmic 35M / Smena 8 that has been sitting around for a while. I'm a noob when it comes to using cameras, but shooting on film has some
interesting outcomes! I've began to record my images on my flickr account http://www.flickr.com/photos/74564163@N05/

Penguin book progress

Just an update on what I've been working on so far with
my book cover for 'One flew over the cuckoo's nest'.

The robot nurse Ratched got a make over in illustrator

An earlier cover design, this cover is more of a collage, I felt this cover
was too busy and opted for something more simple

Concept daft up of my finial design, the book at this stage is a throw
back to the earlier penguin books, i wanted to keep a limited colour
pallet and have the illustrations simple.

Type experimentations

Near final cover.

Penguin

Competition brief for Penguin books, I'm designing a book cover for "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" by Ken Kesey. These are early rough mock ups for the cover design, they're more a way for me to visualize what the book will look like. The idea behind these cover designs is reaching into the idea put forward by one of the characters in the book, Chief Bromden, in which he describes society as a large, mechanized system which he calls "The Combine." So I've illustrated nurse Ratched as a sorting machine with patients on a conveyor belt coming out as machines, this is a literal interpretation showing the nurse as a machine molding patients into machine like beings.
